City Water vs. Well Water in North Carolina: What to Treat For

Around Clayton, you can drive five minutes and go from a house on city water to one on a private well. Both can be perfectly livable, but they call for different treatment, and a system set up for one can underperform on the other.

City water is treated and tested before it reaches you, usually with chlorine or chloramine to keep it safe in the pipes. The most common complaints are taste and smell, plus hard-water scale on faucets, shower glass, and inside water heaters. Whole-home treatment on a city line is mostly about comfort and protecting fixtures and appliances.

Well water is your responsibility from the ground up. In our area, the usual suspects are iron (orange staining in sinks and toilets), sulfur (a rotten-egg smell, often worse on hot water), hardness, and sediment. Wells can also change over time, so a system that worked ten years ago may not match your water today.

That's why we test before we quote. A water analysis tells us what's actually coming through your line, and lets us configure each stage of a whole-home system, from sediment and carbon filtration to ionization and alkalization, for your source instead of guessing.

If you're not sure what's in your water, start with a free analysis. You'll get a clear explanation of what we found and what, if anything, is worth treating.
